Lagos State to Resume Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise After Nearly a Decade

The Lagos State Government has announced the return of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, nearly ten years after it was suspended. Residents are expected to clean their surroundings, clear drainage channels in front of their homes, and dispose of waste responsibly to improve hygiene and tackle the state’s waste management challenges.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed on Saturday that the exercise will officially restart on Saturday, 25th April 2026, and will be held on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.. Wahab emphasized that the initiative is a shared civic responsibility and that the government will ensure strict compliance.

“This exercise is a collective responsibility and a vital part of our commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resilient Lagos. And it shall be backed with the full enforcement weight of the Lagos State Government,” Wahab said.

He noted that the resumption aims to restore a culture of cleanliness that was once central to Lagosians’ lifestyle prior to 2016, when monthly sanitation exercises were common. The suspension of the exercise, following a legal restriction on movement, contributed to mounting environmental pressures in the state, including waste accumulation and flooding risks.

Wahab appealed to residents to dedicate just a few hours each month to maintain a clean environment, drawing attention to similar weekly efforts in marketplaces and encouraging statewide participation.
