Kitselas First Nation in Northwestern B.C. Votes Overwhelmingly in Favour of Self-Governance

In a landmark decision that marks a significant shift toward Indigenous autonomy, the Kitselas First Nation in northwestern British Columbia has officially voted in favour of self-governance. The community has taken a bold and historic step to reclaim greater control over its own affairs, moving away from federal oversight under the Indian Act and embracing a governance structure tailored to their unique cultural and societal needs.

The vote represents a major milestone in the Kitselas Nation’s journey toward self-determination. With a strong majority of community members casting ballots in favour, the outcome clearly reflects a collective desire for more authority over areas such as land management, education, economic development, and cultural preservation.

The Kitselas First Nation, located near Terrace, B.C., has been engaged in self-government negotiations for over two decades. This recent vote marks the culmination of years of planning, consultation, and negotiation between the Nation, the federal government, and the provincial government of British Columbia. Under the new self-government agreement, the Kitselas will be able to create their own laws, manage internal governance, and build policies that reflect their values and traditions—without needing approval from Indigenous Services Canada.

“This is an empowering moment for our people,” said Chief Glenn Bennett of the Kitselas First Nation. “Self-governance means we can make decisions that are best for our Nation. It’s about shaping our own future, protecting our heritage, and creating opportunities for the next generation.”

The vote’s success paves the way for formal ratification of the agreement, expected to take place in the coming months. Once ratified, the self-government agreement will become law and give the Kitselas legal and political recognition as a self-governing entity within Canada.

Experts on Indigenous law and governance have praised the development as a crucial step in advancing reconciliation and Indigenous rights. It also sets a precedent for other First Nations in British Columbia and across Canada who are pursuing similar pathways toward autonomy and cultural resurgence.

The move toward self-governance is also expected to bring long-term economic benefits. By having greater control over land use and development, the Kitselas Nation will be better positioned to attract investment, foster local business, and steward their resources in a way that aligns with community priorities and sustainability goals.

As Canada continues to confront its colonial legacy and rebuild relationships with Indigenous Peoples, the Kitselas vote stands as a symbol of progress and hope. It reaffirms the right of First Nations to define their own identity, build their own institutions, and control their own destiny.
