Kia is recalling more than 80,000 electric and hybrid vehicles in the United States because of issues with airbag and seat belt deployment, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall impacts the 2023-2025 Kia Niro, Niro EV, and Niro plug-in hybrid models. The NHTSA reported that damage to the floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat could hinder the proper deployment of front airbags and seat belts.
“Air bags and seat belts that deploy improperly or an airbag deploying unintentionally can increase the risk of injury in a crash,” the NHTSA explained.
Vehicle owners will receive notifications starting in March, advising them to visit their nearest dealership. Dealers will inspect, replace, and reroute the floor wiring assembly as needed, free of charge.
This follows Kia’s recall last year of nearly 63,000 EV6 models from 2022-2024 due to a potential drive power loss risk that increased the likelihood of crashes.
