Brazil’s prosecutor-general has formally charged former president Jair Bolsonaro with orchestrating a coup to retain power following his 2022 election defeat. The charges allege Bolsonaro and 33 co-conspirators plotted to poison President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and assassinate Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet described the scheme, code-named “Green and Yellow Dagger,” as an attack on democratic institutions. The indictment claims Bolsonaro was aware of and approved the plan, which involved inciting unrest, pressuring military leaders, and drafting decrees to undermine the electoral process.
Bolsonaro’s legal team dismissed the accusations as baseless, while his son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, labeled the charges politically motivated. If convicted, Bolsonaro could face up to 20 years in prison. The Supreme Court will decide whether to proceed to trial.
