Israeli Airstrike on Gaza School Claims At Least 28 Lives, Including Children

JABALIA, GAZA — The ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza has intensified, with a recent airstrike on a United Nations-run school in Jabalia resulting in the deaths of at least 28 Palestinians, including children. According to Gaza’s government media office, the attack has also left around 160 others injured.

The strike on Jabalia, a densely populated refugee camp, marks a continuation of a disturbing trend where evacuation centers and shelters have been targeted. Reports indicate that more than 190 UN facilities have been hit or damaged since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023, often without warning. These facilities have been sheltering thousands of displaced Palestinian families who fled their homes after prior military incursions across northern, central, and southern Gaza.

Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate amid relentless military operations focused primarily on the northern and central regions. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has issued a stark warning about the enclave’s precarious food situation, indicating that despite some declines in extreme hunger, the risk of famine remains high.

Recent assessments reveal that approximately 1.8 million people—around 86 percent of Gaza’s population—are facing food crisis levels categorized as Phase 3 or higher on the IPC’s five-point scale. Alarmingly, about 133,000 individuals, or 6 percent of the population, are experiencing catastrophic hunger, classified as Phase 5.

While the number of individuals in the most severe category has decreased since the early stages of the conflict, the IPC cautions that conditions could rapidly worsen. The impending winter, combined with a slowdown in humanitarian aid and the dire living conditions in overcrowded tent camps, poses significant challenges to those affected.

The International Response

As the humanitarian crisis unfolds, calls for an urgent international response to the violence and its consequences have grown louder. Aid organizations are emphasizing the need for immediate access to food, medical care, and shelter for those displaced by the conflict, while highlighting the urgent need to protect civilians and uphold humanitarian principles.

The situation in Gaza remains critical, and the international community faces increasing pressure to address the escalating violence and humanitarian needs of the affected population.
