An Israeli airstrike early Saturday destroyed a three-storey home in western Gaza City, killing 10 people — including five children — as Arab mediators rushed to revive ceasefire negotiations. In the past 24 hours alone, Israeli strikes have killed at least 49 people, Gaza health officials reported.
The Israeli military said it was targeting a Hamas militant operating from the building, but admitted the collapse of the structure is under review. Survivors like Saed Al-Khour, who lost his family in the strike, disputed the claim, saying, “There is no one from the resistance among them.”
Elsewhere, three others were killed in Gaza City’s Shati refugee camp amid ongoing bombardments. The intense fighting comes as Hamas sent a high-level delegation to Cairo to pursue a renewed ceasefire agreement, shattered last month by escalated Israeli attacks.
Israel has insisted it will not stop its military campaign until all hostages are freed, Hamas is dismantled, and parts of Gaza remain under its control — policies widely criticized internationally. Hamas, meanwhile, maintains it will only release hostages in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal, Palestinian prisoner releases, and a lasting ceasefire.
Efforts led by Egypt and Qatar propose a five-to-seven-year truce, a gradual Israeli withdrawal, and reconstruction of Gaza, but talks remain fragile.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is deepening. The United Nations World Food Program reported that its food supplies have run out, leaving 80% of Gaza’s more than two million residents reliant on charity kitchens, which are also close to collapse due to the ongoing Israeli blockade.
The war, which began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 Israelis and abducted 251 hostages, has resulted in over 51,000 Palestinian deaths, most of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Israel claims about 20,000 militants are among the dead but has not provided evidence.
