Israel Raids Jenin Amid Gaza Ceasefire, Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Jenin, West Bank — At least six Palestinians were killed and dozens injured during a deadly raid by Israeli forces in Jenin, the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian health officials. The operation is part of a wave of military actions across the territory, with escalating violence reported from both Israeli forces and settlers.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is holding, allowing a limited influx of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave. However, the aid deliveries remain far below what is needed, leaving Gaza’s population in dire conditions. “The scale of aid entering Gaza falls short of the ocean of needs,” reported Al Jazeera’s correspondents on the ground.
Rising Death Toll in Gaza and West Bank
The situation in Gaza remains catastrophic. Civil Defence teams in the territory recovered 66 bodies from the rubble yesterday, underscoring the devastating toll of Israel’s bombardments since the war began on October 7, 2023. The death toll in Gaza has reached at least 47,035 Palestinians, with 111,091 others wounded, according to local health authorities.
The West Bank has also witnessed an uptick in violence. Israeli settlers carried out numerous attacks against Palestinians, while military forces arrested dozens of residents in ongoing raids.
In Israel, the October 7 Hamas-led attack resulted in 1,139 deaths and over 200 captives being taken into Gaza, marking one of the deadliest days in the region’s recent history.
Humanitarian Aid: A Drop in the Ocean
The Gaza Strip, already facing a blockade for over 16 years, continues to grapple with a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. While the ceasefire has allowed trucks carrying food, water, and medical supplies to enter, the volume of aid is insufficient to meet the needs of Gaza’s population of over 2 million.
International agencies and local organizations are calling for a significant escalation in aid efforts to address shortages of essential supplies, including medicine, fuel, and clean water.
Settler Violence and Continued Arrests
The occupied West Bank has seen an alarming surge in violence, with reports of settler aggression against Palestinian communities. Human rights groups have documented attacks on homes, farmlands, and vehicles. These incidents compound the suffering of Palestinians in the region, where military raids have led to widespread arrests.
Ceasefire Holding Amid Fragile Calm
As the ceasefire continues to hold in Gaza, there is cautious optimism for a longer-term resolution. However, the ongoing violence in the West Bank and the scale of destruction in Gaza underscore the region’s fragile state.
