Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Takes Effect in Gaza; Prisoner Releases to Follow

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into effect at 09:15 GMT after a nearly three-hour delay, during which Israeli strikes reportedly claimed the lives of at least 19 Palestinians. The truce marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict, offering a temporary pause in hostilities that have devastated the Gaza Strip since October 2023.

Prisoner Exchanges Underway

As part of the ceasefire deal, Hamas has agreed to release three Israeli captives held in Gaza. In response, Israel will free 90 Palestinian prisoners currently detained in its jails. This prisoner exchange underscores the delicate balance of the agreement, negotiated amidst escalating casualties and international calls for de-escalation.

Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The war has left much of Gaza in ruins, with thousands of displaced Palestinians now returning to areas that have been reduced to rubble. The humanitarian toll has been staggering, with the Israeli military campaign killing at least 46,913 Palestinians and injuring over 110,750 since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.

A Day of Tragedy for Israel

The conflict was ignited by Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,139 people in Israel. More than 200 individuals were taken captive during the attacks, adding to the complexities of the ongoing war.

Global Reactions and Calls for Peace

The ceasefire has been met with cautious optimism by the international community, but skepticism remains about its longevity given the history of fragile truces in the region. Humanitarian organizations have urged both parties to commit to sustainable peace, emphasizing the urgent need for rebuilding Gaza and addressing the long-standing grievances fueling the conflict.
