The Republic of Ireland has deported at least 35 Nigerians, including five children, on a chartered flight that left Dublin Airport Wednesday night and landed in Nigeria Thursday, reports the Irish Mirror.
The group consisted of 21 men, nine women, and five children. Irish Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan confirmed the deportations, stating he was “happy to say” all returnees reached Nigeria despite an unscheduled stopover caused by a medical incident onboard.
While the Irish government did not specify the reasons for the deportations, Minister O’Callaghan emphasized that Ireland maintains a “rules-based immigration system” that must be strictly enforced.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) stated they were unaware of this deportation, according to spokesperson Abdur-Rahman Balogun in a statement to Punch Diaspora Tales.
