Indigenous Communities Urge Action on Border Mobility and Cost of Living Amid Federal Election

Members of Ottawa’s Indigenous community are voicing concern over how Canada-U.S. relations could affect those living on or near reserves severed by the American border. During a visit to the Odawa Native Friendship Centre, CBC found that border mobility was a recurring concern among voters ahead of the federal election. Michele Bourque of Aamjiwnaang First Nation shared fears about cross-border travel, echoed by Odawa general manager Gabriel Pangowish, who cited the complexities faced by Akwesasne residents. Odawa executive director Anita Armstrong also noted rising worries over the cost of living, with the centre’s food bank usage doubling in two years. As Odawa nears its 50th anniversary, Indigenous leaders stress the urgency for federal candidates to address long-standing issues. The Assembly of First Nations has outlined its priorities, seeking party commitments on border mobility, economic reconciliation, and justice for Indigenous communities.
