Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has been handed a three-game suspension without pay following a controversial late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence during Sunday’s game. The NFL announced the penalty on Tuesday, citing repeated violations of player safety rules and unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Incident and Fallout
The incident occurred in the second quarter when Lawrence, sliding after a six-yard run, was struck in the head by Al-Shaair. The hit triggered a scuffle between players from both teams, leading to Al-Shaair’s ejection alongside Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones.
In a statement, the NFL emphasized the severity of the linebacker’s actions. “Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game… is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL,” wrote Jon Runyan, the league’s vice president of football operations.
Al-Shaair’s Record
This isn’t Al-Shaair’s first offense. The 27-year-old was previously fined $11,255 for a late hit against the Tennessee Titans and $11,817 for punching an opponent during a game against the Chicago Bears earlier this season.
Despite the suspension, Al-Shaair is eligible to return to the Texans’ active roster for their Week 17 game against the Baltimore Ravens. He has appealed the suspension, according to sources, and awaits a resolution.
Azeez Al-Shaair’s Apology
On Monday, Al-Shaair issued a public apology to Trevor Lawrence, expressing regret for the hit. “I genuinely didn’t see him sliding until it was too late,” he wrote on social media. “To Trevor, I genuinely apologize… I would never want to see any player hurt because of a hit I put on them.”
The linebacker also addressed the backlash he’s received, highlighting racist and Islamophobic abuse. “To the rest of the people… you don’t know my heart nor my character, which I don’t need to prove to any of you,” Al-Shaair added.
Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans Defends Al-Shaair
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans defended Al-Shaair, emphasizing his character and style of play. “For any picture that’s painted that Azeez is a dirty player… that’s the exact opposite of what Azeez is,” Ryans said.
Ryans also pointed to the challenges defenders face with sliding quarterbacks, noting, “A lot of onus is on the defender. Unfortunately, Trevor got hurt. We hope Trevor is okay.”
Reaction from the Jaguars
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson weighed in, calling for a more systematic approach to handling on-field altercations. “We hold ourselves to high regard. We’re in the National Football League. Defend the shield… we got to figure out a way as a league to somehow minimize these plays,” Pederson said.
What’s Next?
The Texans are on a bye week and will return to action on December 15 against the Miami Dolphins. With Al-Shaair’s appeal pending, the team and the league continue to navigate the fallout from the incident.
