Heartbreak and Sextortion: The Tragic Story of Harry Burke

At just 17, Harry Burke was an old soul, deeply patriotic, and filled with dreams of attending the Royal Military College. A Grade 11 student at Souris Regional School, he joined Cadets and the reserves, determined to make Canada a better place. But on April 24, 2023, a Snapchat conversation with a stranger posing as a teenage girl led to unimaginable consequences.

The stranger gained Harry’s trust, exchanged intimate images, and threatened to expose him unless he paid money. The threats extended to his commanding officer, deeply distressing Harry. Despite his parents’ plan to involve the police, Harry tragically died by suicide less than 24 hours after the interaction began.

Harry’s parents, Carl and Barbie Burke, are now advocates for awareness about sextortion, a growing public safety crisis in Canada. RCMP reported 63 cases in Prince Edward Island in 2023, though experts warn these numbers only scratch the surface. Platforms like Snapchat, often targeted by predators, have introduced measures to combat sextortion, but advocates say Canada lacks comprehensive online safety regulations seen in other countries.

While political parties debate solutions, the Burkes demand action. Bills like the Online Harms Act have stalled amid partisan gridlock, leaving Canadian children vulnerable. Harry’s sister, Ella, reminds teens that vulnerability isn’t a weakness but a human trait predators exploit.

Snapchat representatives assert their commitment to user safety, yet for the Burkes, words alone won’t undo their loss or protect others from similar harm.
