Thousands rallied across the United States and worldwide on Saturday in opposition to President Donald Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk, denouncing their policies on government downsizing, human rights, and economic justice. More than 1,200 “Hands Off!” protests, organized by over 150 advocacy groups, took place in all 50 U.S. states and abroad in countries like the U.K., Germany, Portugal, and India.
Demonstrators condemned the Trump administration’s actions including mass federal layoffs, agency closures, Social Security office shutdowns, immigrant deportations, and rollbacks on transgender protections and public health funding. Protesters also targeted Musk, head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, for spearheading cost-cutting measures that critics say are harmful to working-class communities.
At a major rally in Washington, D.C., HUD attorney and union steward Paul Osadebe accused Trump and Musk of prioritizing profit over people, warning that their agenda erodes economic security for millions. Similar sentiments echoed nationwide—from Boston to Columbus to Palm Beach Gardens, near Trump’s golf course—where citizens demanded the administration keep its “hands off” vital public programs like Social Security.
In response, the White House reaffirmed Trump’s pledge to protect benefits for eligible Americans while accusing Democrats of pushing for expanded benefits for undocumented immigrants, a claim widely disputed by activists.
While the protests signal widespread unrest, organizers have yet to spark a movement on the scale of the 2017 Women’s March or the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
