Global Diplomacy – Zelenskyy Meets US, EU Leaders in Rome Ahead of Anticipated Trump-Putin Call

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with top leaders from the United States and the European Union in Rome today, in a strategic diplomatic push aimed at strengthening international support for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia. The high-stakes meetings come just hours before a highly anticipated phone call between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The gathering in the Italian capital underscores Kyiv’s urgent efforts to rally allies as geopolitical dynamics continue to shift ahead of the upcoming U.S. election and amid speculation surrounding Trump’s evolving foreign policy stance, particularly in relation to Moscow.

Zelenskyy held separate discussions with senior U.S. officials and EU leaders, including representatives from NATO and the European Commission. The meetings focused on bolstering military aid, enhancing sanctions against Russia, and planning long-term security commitments for Ukraine as it continues to battle Russian aggression.

In a joint press briefing, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for unwavering Western unity.

“The fight for Ukraine is a fight for European values and global stability,” Zelenskyy stated. “We are grateful for continued support, but we must ensure that Russia understands the consequences of its actions.”

The Ukrainian president’s visit also aimed to secure guarantees for future defense packages, including advanced air defense systems, artillery, and financial assistance for reconstruction efforts.

Tensions are particularly high as global leaders closely watch the expected phone call between Trump and Putin. While Trump has not yet declared his precise stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine, his previous statements calling for a negotiated settlement and expressing admiration for Putin have raised concerns among Kyiv and its allies.

EU diplomats expressed concern that a shift in American policy under Trump could undermine the unity the West has demonstrated since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

“The stakes are enormous,” one EU official said. “Any deviation in Western policy could embolden Russia and destabilize not only Ukraine but the broader international order.”

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who hosted the trilateral meetings, reiterated her country’s commitment to Ukraine and praised Zelenskyy’s leadership in the face of adversity.

The Rome summit concluded with a reaffirmed pledge of continued cooperation, with leaders signaling their intention to hold a follow-up conference on security guarantees later this year.

As the world awaits the outcome of the Trump-Putin conversation, Zelenskyy’s diplomatic engagement in Rome is being viewed as both a preemptive move and a message of resilience — reinforcing Ukraine’s resolve and its place in the Western alliance.
