The New York Giants and quarterback Daniel Jones have officially parted ways after six seasons. Selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones requested his release on Friday morning, a move Giants President John Mara confirmed was mutual. This shift comes after a challenging season where Jones was benched and demoted to the third-string quarterback as the Giants recorded just two wins in their first 10 games.
“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way,” Mara said, expressing appreciation for Jones’ contributions. The 27-year-old quarterback hinted at his departure on Thursday, acknowledging his mixed tenure with the Giants: “There have been some great times, but of course, we all wish there had been more of those,” Jones said. “I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins.” Despite his determination and effort, Jones admitted that the season’s outcome was disappointing.
With Jones departing, Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced that Tommy DeVito, a fan favorite, would start as QB No. 1 in their upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “Not the way we wanted it to turn out by any stretch,” Daboll said of Jones. “He’s been nothing but a pro since I’ve been here with him.”
Jones now faces waivers, but it’s unlikely a team will claim him given the remaining $11.8 million owed in 2024 under his four-year, $160 million contract. NFL teams interested in signing him would need to absorb that guaranteed amount. The Giants originally drafted Jones from Duke as the second quarterback in the 2019 draft class, just after Kyler Murray. Over 70 games with the Giants, Jones compiled a 24-45-1 record, and he tore his ACL in 2023. Still, the quarterback remains optimistic, saying, “I’m excited for the next opportunity. I know there is a lot of good football in front of me, and I’m excited about that.
