George Wendt, Beloved ‘Cheers’ Star Known as Norm Peterson, Dies at 76

George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on NBC’s Cheers, has died at the age of 76. His family confirmed he passed peacefully in his sleep early Tuesday morning, requesting privacy during this time.

Wendt earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Norm, the lovable bar regular whose entrance always sparked the crowd’s signature “Norm!” at the Boston pub. Cheers, which aired from 1982 to 1993, became one of NBC’s most successful shows.

Before his breakthrough role, Wendt honed his comedic craft at Chicago’s Second City. Though his Cheers audition started with a one-word line — “beer” — it led to a defining career moment.

Post-Cheers, Wendt appeared in The George Wendt Show, Saturday Night Live, Portlandia, and Broadway productions such as Hairspray, Art, and Death of a Salesman. He also frequently played Santa Claus, including on Broadway’s Elf and in several holiday specials.

Wendt was a theatre enthusiast, once saying he found more satisfaction on stage than on screen. His talent and humility made him a cherished figure in American entertainment.
