Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, 95, passed away in February, with the newly released autopsy report revealing that heart disease was the primary cause of his death. The report also highlights his battle with advanced Alzheimer’s disease and suggests that he likely had not eaten for a prolonged period prior to his death.
Hackman had a long history of heart problems, including congestive heart failure, an aortic valve replacement, and an irregular heartbeat. He had received a pacemaker in April 2019 to help manage his heart condition. Despite these health struggles, Hackman’s cause of death was ultimately linked to heart disease, with additional complications from his Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
His wife, Betsy Arakawa, was found dead in their New Mexico home a week before Hackman, reportedly from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Arakawa’s autopsy report has not been released yet. Hackman’s carbon monoxide concentration was normal, and he tested negative for hantavirus. Furthermore, a toxicology report revealed that Hackman had no alcohol or drugs in his system, but he did have a low acetone concentration, suggesting prolonged fasting.
Authorities believe Hackman may not have been aware of his wife’s death and likely passed away on February 18, as indicated by an abnormal heart rhythm recorded by his pacemaker. The couple’s bodies were discovered on February 26, with Hackman found near his cane and Arakawa in the bathroom.
The investigation into their deaths has been extensive, with authorities conducting interviews and searching for clues in Hackman’s home. Recent videos have shown detectives retracing their steps and examining Arakawa’s laptop for further evidence.
