Gaza Surgeon Released After Six Months of Detention in Israeli Prison Amid Health Workers’ Crisis

Dr. Khaled Al Serr, a 32-year-old Palestinian surgeon, was released on September 29, 2024, after being detained in an Israeli prison for over six months without charges. Arrested during a raid on Nasser Hospital in Gaza, Al Serr experienced what he described as “a nightmare,” enduring torture, humiliation, and medical neglect during his imprisonment. His family was unaware of his whereabouts for months, learning of his fate through other released detainees.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 300 healthcare workers remain in Israeli custody, including 145 doctors. The continued detention of medical personnel is further straining Gaza’s already fragile healthcare system, with international organizations like Amnesty International calling for their release. Amnesty alleges these detentions are arbitrary and violate international law, exacerbating the health crisis in the region.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have not disclosed details regarding Al Serr’s detention or the status of the other health workers. However, they claim that the detainees were suspected of involvement in terrorist activities, which has sparked criticism from human rights groups. The arrests of medical staff are contributing to the collapse of Gaza’s health infrastructure, which is already severely affected by the ongoing conflict.
