A traffic signaller lost his life after being struck by a snow plow Monday afternoon in Gatineau, Quebec’s Limbour district, according to the Gatineau Police Department.
Authorities responded to a collision between a pedestrian and a snow plow around 1 p.m. near the intersection of boulevard la Vérendrye and rue de Cannes, approximately 8 kilometers north of Parliament Hill. First responders pronounced the adult male victim dead at the scene.
Gatineau police confirmed the man was employed by a subcontracting company working on behalf of the city and was actively involved in a snow-clearing operation when the accident occurred.
While police continue to investigate the circumstances, they do not suspect criminal activity. The Quebec workplace safety board, the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST), has launched an inquiry into the incident.
As a result of the fatal accident, boulevard la Vérendrye was closed between avenue Gatineau and rue de Cannes, along with rue de Cannes between rue de Rayol and rue de Saint-Vallier, on Monday afternoon.
With the rise of AI-assisted snow removal technology, safety measures in automated plowing operations remain a key concern for municipalities.
