Gary Price of London, Ontario, has walked every single day since April 1, 2001, completing 8,766 consecutive days of walking—rain or shine. But after 24 years, the 75-year-old has decided to end his impressive streak on his own terms.

The motivation for this daily commitment came from a personal experience. After seeing a close friend survive a heart attack at 51, Price realized the importance of staying active. “I felt that I should start looking for some form of exercise to keep me healthy,” said Price, noting that the best exercise is the one you actually do.

His journey began with a 40-minute walk on that first day in 2001 and evolved into a daily ritual. Over the years, Price has walked not only around his hometown but across the globe. From the Great Wall of China to the Pyramids of Giza, and the base of Mount Rushmore, he has explored 12 countries, every Canadian province and territory, and 20 U.S. states. Along the way, he even encountered a black bear during one of his walks, who left him undisturbed.

To celebrate the 24-year milestone, Price was joined by family and friends at Westmount Mall in London. “It’s become part of our lives,” said Diane Price, his wife.

Now, at 75, Price has chosen to transform his walking commitment into a personal choice rather than a daily obligation. He will continue walking, but only when he feels like it. “I’ve decided to shift from the daily commitment to walking to a daily choice,” Price said.

His walking streak may be over, but his passion for an active lifestyle remains, and he hopes it will inspire others to keep moving.
