Garden City Cinemas Reopens After 15 Years, Spotlighting Indian Language Films

Garden City Cinemas has officially reopened after 15 years, focusing on Indian language films alongside Hollywood releases. The theatre, located in the Garden City Shopping Centre on McPhillips Street, will feature Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Telugu movies.

Manager Thomas Oberlin says the community is thrilled about the reopening, with many nostalgic for the venue. The cinema originally opened in 1970 but shut down in 2010. York Cinema, an Ontario-based company known for operating theatres like Albion and Woodside Cinemas, acquired and renovated the venue, making it their first location in Manitoba.

Renovations included upgraded seating, sound systems, screens, washrooms, and concessions. Since reopening on February 21, there has been a surge in interest from the local community, with requests for Hindi, Punjabi, and Filipino films.

Local moviegoers Payal Pardasani and Rahul Bhavnani welcome the additional options, as Indian films are often unavailable or have limited showtimes in Winnipeg. They emphasize that watching these films in theatres fosters a strong sense of community, offering an experience that streaming platforms cannot replicate.
