Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe advanced to the Australian Open women’s doubles quarterfinals on Sunday after a hard-fought 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Laura Siegemund of Germany and Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in a nearly 2.5-hour match. Despite a slow start, the duo dominated with three aces and a 73% winning rate on first serves, saving six of seven break points and excelling in reception with 43 points won. They will face Miyu Kato of Japan and Renata Zarazua in the quarters.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and partner Nadiia Kichenok were eliminated in the third round of women’s doubles by American Taylor Townsend and Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova in just 54 minutes, with a 6-3, 6-0 scoreline. Fernandez and Kichenok struggled, recording no aces and converting none of their three breakpoints. Fernandez also exited the singles competition on Friday after a 6-4, 6-2 loss to American Coco Gauff.
