Funding Boost to Expand Veterinary Care and Animal Welfare in Remote Manitoba Communities

New funding announced will enhance veterinary care access in remote Manitoba communities, including a pilot project partnering with two Indigenous communities to control dog populations and improve animal welfare. The province is dedicating \$100,000 annually over four years as part of a \$1-million partnership with the Winnipeg Humane Society to support a northern and remote veterinary care initiative launched last year.

Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn emphasized the mission to ensure humane treatment of animals everywhere, recognizing underserved areas. The Winnipeg Humane Society will receive \$250,000 through this partnership to run its One Health mobile veterinary clinic program, offering spaying, neutering, and wellness exams at low or no cost in northern communities, matched by the organization.

The initiative aims to curb animal overpopulation in Manitoba, reducing shelter numbers and making remote communities safer by lowering risks of dog attacks and rabies. Since last year, 22 remote clinics have operated in 17 underserved communities, with plans to expand to more Indigenous and northern areas.

An additional \$100,000 will support community-based groups in remote areas to promote animal welfare. The Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association will receive \$50,000 to train staff and provide equipment for vaccines in remote communities, expanding efforts to supply vaccines in Indigenous regions since 2021.

Manitoba will also create two animal health and welfare specialist positions in Thompson and Swan River with \$250,000 in new funding to help enforce the Animal Care Act.
