Classes at Marion School in Winnipeg’s St. Boniface area were canceled Wednesday following an early morning fire. Firefighters were dispatched to the K-8 school on Des Meurons Street shortly after 6 a.m. after a fire alarm alerted authorities. Upon arrival, crews discovered smoke and flames emanating from inside the building.
Fortunately, the school was empty at the time, and the fire was quickly contained to a single office, minimizing damage to the property. The Winnipeg Fire Department later confirmed the blaze was accidental, caused by an overheated electrical outlet connected to a portable space heater.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Families of students have been advised to await further updates from the school administration regarding the resumption of classes and ongoing investigations into the fire.
