Federal Election Campaign Begins in Canada Amid U.S. Trade Tensions
Canada’s federal party leaders have embarked on the first full day of campaigning in a five-week election period, set against a backdrop of escalating trade tensions with the United States. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently succeeded Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party, called for the snap election scheduled for April 28, citing a “crisis” induced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of punitive tariffs and suggestions of annexation.
The election pits Carney against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, a populist figure critical of Liberal policies. Poilievre has pledged to stand up to Trump, though his perceived alignment with Trump’s ideology has complicated his campaign.
Amid these developments, Canadian-American comedian Mike Myers has appeared in a Liberal Party election ad, urging Canadians to remain resilient against President Trump’s actions. In the ad, Myers uses the phrase “elbows up,” a homage to Canadian ice hockey legend Gordie Howe, serving as a rallying cry against Trump’s tariff threats.
The campaign is largely expected to focus on how the leaders will address the challenges posed by Trump’s trade policies and their impact on Canada’s economy and sovereignty.
