FDA Warns Tom’s of Maine Over Bacteria-Contaminated Toothpaste and Facility Violations

The inspection uncovered further sanitation issues, including a mold-like substance near a water storage tank and powdery residue near the production area of Tom’s Silly Strawberry Anticavity Toothpaste. The FDA determined that the facility’s water system is inadequate and requires significant improvements to ensure safety and quality compliance.
Consumer Complaints Ignored
The FDA also criticized Tom’s of Maine for neglecting to properly address consumer complaints. Approximately 400 complaints regarding the odor, color, and taste of various toothpaste products, including those designed for children, were reportedly ignored. The company’s policy requires investigation only when a trend is identified, which the FDA deemed insufficient for addressing potential safety risks.
