A devastating wildfire swept through central Alberta, burning down four homes on the Samson Cree Nation and the nearby Ermineskin Cree Nation. The fire, which ignited on Friday, spread quickly, causing panic and evacuations in the region. Despite the destruction, many homes, including that of Flora Northwest, were spared thanks to the swift action of firefighters.
Northwest, who was at home with her grandson when the flames approached, recalled the frightening speed with which the fire spread. They managed to evacuate just in time, as firefighters arrived and successfully saved her home. “We’re very lucky to have our houses,” Northwest shared, reflecting on the challenges of housing in the area.
The wildfire, located about 80 kilometers south of Edmonton, prompted the Maskwacis Fire Department to declare a state of emergency. The flames, which stretched 1.5 kilometers wide and more than six kilometers long, were fought by eight different fire departments. The fire took hours to control, and nearby roads, including Highway 611, were temporarily closed.
In response, the Samson Cree First Nation set up an emergency shelter at the Howard Buffalo Memorial Centre for those displaced by the fire. Evacuations were coordinated with the Red Cross, offering assistance to those affected. Fortunately, despite the widespread damage, no casualties were reported.
As of Saturday afternoon, Alberta Wildfire reports that 23 active wildfires are burning across the province. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution, particularly with the elevated wildfire risk in the area.
