The estranged husband of Erin Patterson, the Australian woman charged with murdering three of his elderly relatives by allegedly serving them a meal laced with death cap mushrooms, testified Thursday that their relationship had grown strained in the year before the incident.
Simon Patterson told the Supreme Court of Victoria that he repeatedly declined lunch invitations from Erin, including the July 29, 2023 gathering where his parents and aunt died and another relative fell ill. Prosecutors allege Erin intentionally poisoned the beef wellington lunch to murder her in-laws.
The accused has pleaded not guilty, claiming the incident was a tragic accident. The trial, drawing widespread media attention, is set to continue through early June.
