Energy Companies Urge U.S. Senate to Protect Clean Energy Tax Credits Amid GOP Pushback

On Tuesday, energy companies representing baseload power technologies—including nuclear, energy storage, geothermal, and hydropower—appealed to U.S. Senate leaders to maintain clean energy tax credits that were severely weakened by a recent Republican-led House bill. These tax credits are vital for financing and developing stable, reliable power sources crucial to America’s energy security.

Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have criticized these credits for favoring intermittent renewables like wind and solar, arguing the U.S. requires more baseload power from coal and natural gas to meet rising electricity demands driven by data centers and artificial intelligence.

However, in a letter addressed to Senate leaders John Thune, Chuck Schumer, Mike Crapo, and Ron Wyden, the coalition stressed that baseload technologies also depend on these subsidies for long-term investments and infrastructure development. They warned that changes to the credits’ availability or phase-out schedule could jeopardize ongoing projects and undermine U.S. energy security goals.

Signatories include geothermal firm Fervo Energy, energy storage company Form Energy, nuclear innovators Oklo and TerraPower, as well as advocacy groups for hydropower, geothermal, and advanced nuclear energy.
