Elton John Slams UK Government Over AI Copyright Proposal, Calls It “Theft”

Elton John has strongly criticized the British government’s proposed copyright changes that would allow tech firms to train AI models using UK creative content without guaranteeing compensation to creators. Speaking on Sunday, John called the move “criminal” and accused the government of “committing theft.”

The proposal would let AI developers train on any material they can lawfully access, with creators required to opt out if they wish to prevent their work’s use. This has sparked outrage among major British artists including Paul McCartney, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Ed Sheeran.

John warned that such a move could devastate young artists who lack the resources to protect their work. “A machine doesn’t have a soul… Human beings create to bring pleasure,” he told the BBC, expressing deep concern over the ethical implications.

Despite his support for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party, John pledged to continue fighting for young creatives. The government has responded by saying it is still consulting and will ensure any decision works for creators before moving forward.

The UK aims to lead in AI innovation but faces criticism for risking its globally successful creative sector, which includes theatre, film, advertising, publishing, and music.
