The Edo State House of Assembly has appealed the judgement by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which set aside the impeachment of the state’s former deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
The lawmakers have also filed a stay of execution on the judgment pending appeal.
Justice Omotosho had earlier today voided Shuaibu’s impeachment as the deputy governor of the state.
Omotosho, while delivering judgment in the suit, ordered that Shaibu be reinstated to office because the state House of Assembly did not follow due process in impeaching him.
He also voided the appointment of the new deputy governor who replaced Shaibu.
Crisis between Governor Obaseki and Shaibu began when he indicated interest in succeeding his boss. Shaibu and nine others contested the party’s primaries against Obaseki’s preferred candidate, Asue Ighodalo who eventually picked the ticket.
Philip Shaibu was impeached as deputy governor by the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, April 8, following the adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the Chief Judge of the State to probe allegations of misconduct against the former deputy governor.
Upon the impeachment of Shaibu, the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki appointed Marvellous Omobayo as his deputy to complete his second tenure in office which ends on November 11, 2024.
