Edan Alexander, an American-Israeli soldier held hostage for over 19 months in Gaza, was released by Hamas on Monday, marking a significant gesture toward the Trump administration ahead of his visit to the region. The Israeli military confirmed Alexander’s release, noting that he was handed over to the Red Cross and is being accompanied by Israeli Defense Forces special forces back to Israeli territory for medical assessment and a reunion with his family.
Alexander’s release comes shortly before U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit, and his extended family gathered in Tel Aviv to celebrate his freedom. Alexander had been captured during Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and 251 hostages. His release marks a rare development since Israel resumed intense military strikes on Gaza in March, following the collapse of an eight-week ceasefire.
While his family celebrated, there remains concern for the other 58 hostages still held by Hamas. The Israeli government, along with international mediators like Qatar and Egypt, continues to work toward securing the release of the remaining captives.
