Doug Ford’s Snap Election Call: Ontario Heads to the Polls Amid Trade and Political Uncertainty

Premier Doug Ford is set to call a snap election next Wednesday, sending Ontarians to the polls on February 27, sources revealed. The decision, made after months of indecision, accelerates an election initially slated for June 2026. Ford cited the need for a new mandate to address the challenges posed by four years of a Donald Trump presidency in the United States.

Speaking Thursday, Ford emphasized the importance of securing public approval to invest in protecting Ontario’s people, businesses, and communities. His Progressive Conservative party plans a “super caucus” event on Saturday to strategize, signaling an early election campaign.

Ford intends to juggle his role as premier and party leader while traveling to Washington, D.C., twice in February to negotiate against Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs, which he warns could devastate Ontario’s auto sector and cost up to 500,000 jobs.

Opposition parties, however, criticize the early election as unnecessary. Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie accused Ford of prioritizing personal political gain over stability, while NDP Leader Marit Stiles pointed to ongoing issues like housing, healthcare, and family doctor shortages.

The election timing has raised speculation, particularly with Ford navigating internal controversies such as the Greenbelt development fallout and the resignation of key ministers. Additionally, the premier’s $3-billion affordability plan, including $200 cheques for Ontarians, drew accusations of vote-buying.

With Trump’s presidency reigniting trade fears and federal political turmoil following Justin Trudeau’s resignation as Liberal leader, Ford argues that an early provincial mandate is essential. Meanwhile, opposition leaders question his motives, suggesting a push to preempt a federal election and avoid further scrutiny over unresolved scandals.
