Two key Winnipeg seats have shifted in Canada’s 2025 federal election, with Liberal Doug Eyolfson reclaiming Winnipeg West from Conservative Marty Morantz, and Conservative Colin Reynolds defeating NDP candidate Leila Dance in Elmwood-Transcona.
Eyolfson, a former emergency room physician and MP, secured Winnipeg West after a challenging race with Morantz, who had previously ousted him in 2019 and won again in 2021. Eyolfson’s victory came after the riding underwent significant boundary changes, incorporating parts of Rosser and Winnipeg’s Tuxedo. Eyolfson expressed relief and happiness at regaining his seat, saying, “It’s been a long time coming.”
Meanwhile, Reynolds flipped Elmwood-Transcona, which had been held by the NDP since its creation in 1988. Dance had won the seat in a 2024 byelection after the resignation of NDP MP Daniel Blaikie. However, boundary changes and a national shift away from the NDP led to Reynolds’ success, though Dance attributed her loss to strategic voting.
In other races, Ginette Lavack won St. Boniface-St. Vital for the Liberals, and Grant Jackson took Brandon-Souris for the Conservatives. Incumbent Conservative MPs retained their strongholds in rural Manitoba, while Liberal MPs Kevin Lamoureux, Ben Carr, and Terry Duguid held their Winnipeg seats.
The results suggest a shift in Manitoba, with Liberals holding urban ridings and Conservatives maintaining rural strongholds, setting the stage for a possible Liberal government.
