Doctor Denies Racism Allegations in Manitoba Appendicitis Lawsuit

A doctor in The Pas, Manitoba, has denied allegations of racism and medical negligence in response to a lawsuit filed by Justin Flett, a Cree man who claims the physician misdiagnosed his acute appendicitis as a hangover. The doctor has asked the Court of King’s Bench to dismiss the case, asserting that his treatment was appropriate based on Flett’s symptoms and test results.

Flett, a Tataskweyak Cree Nation member, sought care for severe abdominal pain in January 2023 but was sent home. Hours later, he was diagnosed with appendicitis in Winnipeg, where his appendix burst, leading to complications. The doctor argues that Flett’s injuries were not a result of his care and that the lawsuit does not meet legal requirements.
