Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White debuted at the top of the North American box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $43 million. However, with a massive $250 million production budget and mixed reception, the film faces an uphill battle to profitability.
Starring Rachel Zegler, the remake arrives 90 years after Disney’s original animated classic. The film has been mired in controversy, from pandemic-related delays to backlash over its heavy use of CGI to depict the seven dwarves.
Critics have been divided, with The Guardian calling it “toe-curlingly terrible,” while The Washington Post deemed it “surprisingly entertaining.” Audience reactions have been more favorable, leaving analysts watching closely to see how the film performs in the coming weeks.
Elsewhere at the box office, Black Bag, starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, climbed to second place with $4.4 million. Captain America: Brave New World landed in third at $4.1 million, followed by Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 with $3.9 million. Last weekend’s top film, Novocaine, tumbled to fifth place with $3.8 million.
