Deadly Wildfires Worsen in South Korea, More Disaster Zones Declared

Wildfires continue to spread across South Korea, prompting authorities to designate three additional counties as special disaster zones. Since the fires ignited on Saturday, at least four people have died, and hundreds have been forced to evacuate as strong winds and dry conditions fuel the blazes.

In Sancheong County, 64-year-old farmer Kim Byung-wook lost his home of over 30 years, along with irreplaceable memories. “Things that remind me of my youth disappeared without a trace—photos of my children when they were young,” he told Reuters.

Acting President Han Duck-soo, who resumed his post after a Constitutional Court ruling, expanded the disaster zone list to include affected areas in South Gyeongsang, Ulsan, and North Gyeongsang provinces. The designation unlocks additional funding and resources for disaster relief efforts. Han visited Uiseong County, one of the hardest-hit regions, to meet with displaced residents.
