At least 16 people have died as multiple wildfires rage through South Korea’s southeastern region, prompting mass evacuations and prison transfers. The fires, fueled by strong winds and dry weather, remain uncontained since igniting on Saturday.
Uiseong County has suffered the highest toll, with 12 fatalities, while four deaths were linked to a separate blaze in Sancheong County, according to the Safety Ministry. Some victims perished while trying to escape, with reports of overturned vehicles in the chaos.
Acting President Han Duck-soo has pledged aerial and ground firefighting reinforcements, though dry conditions are expected to persist. The fires have already razed entire neighborhoods, gutted ancient temples, and destroyed homes. The government has declared the affected areas special disaster zones.
