At least 32 people, including two children, were killed and 84 others injured in a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday. The attack, involving two ballistic missiles, struck the city center at around 10:15 a.m. local time, just as locals gathered to mark Palm Sunday.
Shocking images from the scene revealed rows of black body bags and victims lying among debris and burnt vehicles. Acting mayor Artem Kobzar called it a “terrible tragedy” for the community, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as the act of “filthy scum,” demanding a global response against Russia’s continued aggression.
This marks the second major civilian attack in just over a week, following a missile strike in Kryvyi Rih that killed 20 people, including nine children. French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire, condemning Russia’s disregard for human life and international law.
Elsewhere, Kharkiv’s mayor reported that a kindergarten was damaged by another Russian strike, though no injuries were reported.
The strike came amid rising tensions and diplomatic discord. Russia and Ukraine’s foreign ministers exchanged accusations over violating a tentative U.S.-brokered ceasefire targeting energy infrastructure. While Russia accused Ukraine of initiating attacks, Kyiv reported that Russia had launched nearly 70 missiles and thousands of drones and bombs since agreeing to the pause.
