Deadly Quarry Collapse in West Java Leaves 19 Dead, Search Continues for Missing Victims

A rock collapse at a quarry in Cirebon, West Java province, has resulted in 19 fatalities, eight injuries, and six people still missing, according to local police. The Indonesian search and rescue agency Basarnas continues to search for survivors trapped under the rubble following the collapse on Friday. Authorities have named two suspects charged with environmental law violations, negligence, and failing to provide safety equipment.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse and is assessing risks of further landslides. Cirebon Regency is known for soil instability, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. Geological experts suggest that the undercutting mining method and steep cliff slopes contributed to the disaster. Rescue operations face challenges due to ongoing weather risks and unstable terrain, prompting warnings to avoid activities during heavy rain.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi criticized the quarry site on social media, stating it is hazardous and fails to meet worker safety standards.
