The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) began its two-week hearing on Tuesday to redefine Canadian content, but major streaming companies Netflix, Paramount, and Apple pulled out of the schedule at the last minute.
MPA-Canada, which represents several leading streaming platforms, rescheduled its appearance for Friday’s end of the day. The hearing is part of the CRTC’s broader efforts to update the Online Streaming Act, which aims to apply Canada’s broadcasting laws to online platforms.
The CRTC’s updated directive has faced legal challenges from large global streaming services, which are contesting the requirement to contribute funds to Canada’s broadcast sector. In response to this pushback, U.S. business and tech organizations raised concerns in January, warning that the modernization of Canadian content rules could negatively impact trade relations between Canada and the United States.
