Cosmo Music, Canada’s largest music retailer, is closing its doors after 57 years of serving musicians and fostering a vibrant music community. The decision follows post-pandemic challenges despite significant technological investments and market adaptation efforts.
Founded in 1966 as Cosmo Guitars by Tom Hebert, the company evolved into a retail store in 1968, offering guitars and accessories. By 1971, Cosmo Music relocated to Richmond Hill, expanding its inventory and adding music lessons. Over the years, the store introduced brass and woodwind instruments, opened a specialized Brass and Woodwind Centre in 1990, and in 2008, consolidated all locations into one massive superstore, becoming North America’s largest musical instrument retail space.
The Hebert family expressed gratitude to employees, customers, and brand partners for their unwavering support. “It’s been a privilege to serve as a hub for musicians and music lovers alike,” they stated.
Cosmo Music’s Richmond Hill location at 10 Via Renzo Drive will remain open for a limited time, with a closing date dependent on inventory and other factors. A final sale will offer discounts on gear, and open order refunds will be processed. Customer support will remain active during the transition.
