Controversial Disallowed Goal Costs Aston Villa Champions League Spot

Aston Villa’s hopes of Champions League qualification were dashed after a controversial decision in their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Needing just a point to secure a top-five finish, Villa finished sixth following Newcastle’s 1-0 loss to Everton.

The turning point came in the second half after goalkeeper Emi Martinez was sent off. Villa thought they had taken the lead when Morgan Rogers dispossessed United keeper Altay Bayindir and scored, only for referee Thomas Bramall to disallow the goal for a foul. Replays showed Bayindir did not have full control of the ball, but VAR could not intervene as the whistle had blown before the ball crossed the line.

Villa lodged a complaint with the PGMOL, questioning Bramall’s appointment to such a high-stakes game, citing his lack of Premier League experience. The club’s director of football, Damian Vidagany, emphasized the concern was about the referee’s selection, not just the decision. Bramall has officiated only 11 Premier League games this season.

Despite the controversy, United scored twice—through Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen—to seal the win. Villa captain John McGinn called the disallowed goal decision “incredible,” expressing frustration over VAR’s limitations.
