Colorado State University’s Tropical Cyclones Research Team has released its initial forecast for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, predicting above-average activity. The outlook calls for 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes—exceeding the 1991-2020 seasonal averages of 14, seven, and three, respectively.
Key factors driving the forecast include unusually warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures, which provide fuel for storms, and the likelihood of neutral or La Niña conditions in the Pacific, creating a more favorable wind environment for hurricane development. However, Saharan dust outbreaks and the strength of the African monsoon could influence storm formation.
Colorado State will issue updates on June 11, July 9, and August 6. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center will release its season outlook on May 15, with the Canadian Hurricane Centre expected to follow suit.
