Miguel Uribe Turbay, a 39-year-old Colombian presidential candidate, remains in critical condition after being shot three times—twice in the head—during a campaign event in Bogotá. The attack took place Saturday while Uribe was addressing a small crowd in a park.
Police quickly apprehended a 15-year-old suspect at the scene. Uribe sustained gunshot wounds to the head and knee and was airlifted to Santa Fe Clinic, where supporters have gathered to keep vigil.
Uribe’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, appealed for prayers, saying, “Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him.”
The shooting has drawn widespread condemnation. Uribe’s Centro Democrático party called the attack a grave threat to democracy and freedom in Colombia. President Gustavo Petro’s government denounced the violence as an attack against both Uribe and the nation’s democratic values.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the attack, describing it as a “direct threat to democracy.”
Uribe, from a prominent political family, announced his 2026 presidential bid last October. His family has deep political roots—his father was a union leader and businessman, while his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed in 1991 during a botched rescue following her kidnapping by Pablo Escobar’s Medellín cartel.
