In 1977, 16-year-old Dawn Momohara was found murdered at McKinley High School in Honolulu. Her body, discovered in the English building, bore evidence of sexual assault and strangulation. The crime shocked Hawaii’s close-knit community, leaving lasting fear and sadness.
Decades later, modern DNA testing identified the suspect. On Tuesday, authorities arrested Gideon Castro, 66, a McKinley High graduate, at a Utah nursing home. Castro, who knew the victim, is charged with second-degree murder. Investigators had struggled for years with cold leads until DNA evidence from Dawn’s clothing matched Castro.
Chun Oakland, a former state legislator and classmate of Dawn, expressed mixed emotions about the case’s resolution, emphasizing the importance of community care.
The long-awaited arrest brings partial closure to a tragedy that haunted Hawaii for decades.
