CN Rail Signal Workers Issue 72-Hour Strike Notice, Set to Walk Out Tuesday

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) demands better work-life balance and higher wages as negotiations with CN Rail reach a critical point.

Canadian National Railway (CN) is facing an imminent labor strike as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has issued a 72-hour strike notice. The union, which represents approximately 750 CN employees working in signals and communications, has warned that unless a settlement is reached, its members will walk off the job starting Tuesday, January 28.

Union Pushes for Fair Compensation and Work-Life Balance

The IBEW has emphasized that its strike mandate—backed by an overwhelming 95% of its membership—reflects growing frustration among workers over working conditions and wages. The union is demanding improved work-life balance and salary increases, citing the critical role signal workers play in ensuring the safety and efficiency of Canada’s rail network.

“These workers are essential to keeping CN’s operations running smoothly, and they deserve fair compensation and a reasonable work-life balance,” the union stated.

CN Rail Prepares Contingency Plan

In response to the strike notice, CN Rail issued a statement acknowledging the situation and assuring stakeholders that it has a contingency plan in place to minimize disruptions. The railway company remains focused on maintaining the supply chain and ensuring the smooth flow of goods across Canada.

“CN is aware of the strike notice and is taking steps to mitigate any potential impact on operations,” the company said.

However, industry experts warn that a strike by signal and communications workers could lead to significant logistical challenges, as these employees are responsible for maintaining the railway’s signaling systems, which are critical to safe and efficient train operations.

Potential Impact on Canada’s Supply Chain

CN Rail is a vital component of Canada’s freight transportation network, moving goods across North America. Any prolonged disruption could have ripple effects on industries relying on rail transport, including agriculture, manufacturing, and energy.

Labor disputes within the rail sector have historically caused delays and economic disruptions. If an agreement is not reached before the strike deadline, businesses and consumers could see potential slowdowns in shipments.

Negotiations Continue as Deadline Nears

With the clock ticking, negotiations between CN Rail and the IBEW remain ongoing. The union has expressed a willingness to continue discussions in hopes of reaching a fair agreement before the Tuesday deadline. However, if a deal is not struck, Canada could see yet another major labor dispute impacting critical infrastructure.

As developments unfold, both businesses and government officials will be closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a resolution that avoids widespread disruptions to the country’s transportation network.
