Chinese efforts to spy on the Dutch semiconductor industry are intensifying, Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans revealed at the Shangri-La Dialogue security meeting in Singapore. Highlighting the strategic importance of semiconductor technology, Brekelmans stated that China seeks intellectual property to advance its own technological capabilities. Dutch military intelligence has reported persistent Chinese cyber espionage targeting the semiconductor, aerospace, and maritime sectors to bolster China’s armed forces.
Recent intelligence confirms that cyber threats from China remain the most significant, with increased activity observed over the past year. The Netherlands has responded by strengthening protections for key industries and aiming to reduce reliance on China for critical raw materials at both national and European Union levels. Chinese authorities have not commented on the allegations, traditionally denying involvement in cyberattacks.
