China Warns Against Trade Deals Favoring U.S. at Beijing’s Expense Amid Global Economic Tensions

China has issued a sharp warning to countries engaging in trade negotiations with the United States, urging them to avoid striking deals that could be deemed unfavorable or harmful to Beijing’s economic interests. The announcement, delivered through the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comes amid intensifying global trade rivalries and Washington’s push to strengthen economic alliances across Asia, Europe, and the Global South.

A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry stated that while the nation supports free trade and open economic cooperation, it “firmly opposes any agreement or economic arrangement that deliberately excludes or targets China.” The warning appears to be a direct response to recent moves by the United States to deepen trade ties with countries like Japan, South Korea, India, and key Southeast Asian nations, often under frameworks perceived by Beijing as attempts to contain its influence.

This diplomatic caution reflects China’s growing concern over the Biden administration’s ongoing efforts to recalibrate global supply chains away from Chinese dominance. Initiatives such as the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and other bilateral trade pacts have been viewed by Chinese officials as part of a broader strategy to marginalize the world’s second-largest economy.

“Countries should refrain from participating in trade initiatives that serve geopolitical purposes rather than economic development,” said the ministry spokesperson. “We urge all parties to uphold the principles of fairness, mutual benefit, and non-discrimination.”

The warning also comes as China grapples with internal economic challenges, including a sluggish post-pandemic recovery, declining foreign investment, and ongoing tech export restrictions imposed by the U.S. Beijing is now doubling down on safeguarding its global trade footprint and defending its role in multilateral economic institutions.

International analysts say the message is both a diplomatic shot across the bow and a reminder to China’s trading partners that aligning too closely with Washington could result in strained ties with Beijing. In recent months, China has used economic incentives, market access, and diplomatic channels to maintain its influence in countries being courted by the U.S.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials maintain that their trade outreach is not aimed at excluding China but rather at creating a “level playing field” for businesses and ensuring economic resilience against supply chain disruptions and unfair trade practices.

As the geopolitical rivalry between the U.S. and China continues to reshape global trade dynamics, countries may find themselves navigating increasingly complex diplomatic terrain. For many, the challenge lies in balancing strategic partnerships with Washington while preserving vital economic ties with Beijing.
