China Stages Military Drills Near Taiwan, Heightening Regional Tensions

China has launched extensive military drills around Taiwan as a “stern warning” against separatism, escalating tensions between Beijing and Taipei. The exercises, conducted on Taiwan’s northern, southern, and eastern coasts, involved naval, air, and artillery operations, with Chinese forces simulating blockades and strikes.

Taiwan responded by deploying warships and monitoring Chinese military movements closely. Its defense ministry confirmed that over 71 Chinese aircraft and 13 naval vessels participated, with some approaching Taiwan’s contiguous zone. The government condemned the drills, accusing Beijing of being a “troublemaker” and reaffirming Taiwan’s sovereignty.

China’s aggressive stance comes amid rising rhetoric against Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing branded a “parasite” in a provocative military propaganda campaign. The drills also coincided with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent visit to Asia, where he criticized China’s military assertiveness.

The U.S. reiterated its support for Taiwan, with the White House warning against any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo. Meanwhile, China’s state media framed the exercises as routine, signaling that military maneuvers around Taiwan are becoming normalized.

As geopolitical tensions rise, Taiwan’s defense leadership criticized China’s actions, pointing to ongoing corruption scandals within Beijing’s military. Despite the aggressive posturing, Taiwan remains committed to maintaining stability while preparing for potential escalations.
